Tourney Time Schedule, Payout , and Tournament Contributors, etc. were posted on the play room bulletin board.
Larry Keen opens the Southern Tournament by welcoming all checker players, 25 entrants, representing 7 States. 10 players represented TN, 7 from NC, 3 from KY, 2 from WV, and one each from FL, LA, GA.
Mr. Ricky Rodriguez from Wilson County Convention and Visitors Bureau spoke to us and mentioned they appreciate ACF choosing Lebanon for our upcoming August National Tournament. He left Welcome Bags from Lebanon-Wilson County Chamber of Commerce. There were also local merchant bags drawn as door prizes. Southern Tournament promoter Ken Christian made arrangements with next door Ponderosa Steakhouse to gave all checker players their 15% meal discount.
Larry suggesting we play 3 divisions of 7 Rounds of Round Robin with the highest match points Swiss paired in the final round.
Southern Checker Association business meeting follow with Ken Christian, VP covering last year business minutes and open discussion & voted on several items that will be on next years agenda.
We re-voted Frank Davis as President, Ken Christian as VP, and Mary as Sec./Tres. in as next years officers. (officers are elected every year)
Next items were decision to keep the 3-Day Tournament Format of 8 rounds instead of 10 as voted in this past 2008 Southern.
It appears that most players liked the 1-1/4 hour games, 8 Rounds of Round-Robin. This will be brought up in 2010, discussed and voted on.
The tournament playing rules, points, forfeit, fees, prize fund distribution, repairing, and division winners must move up next year, all remains the same as established in 2008. We kept the same arrangements for 2010 Southern at same location and schedule it the 2nd weekend of July, (July 9-10-11, 2010).
Dr. Shuffett youngest son Don Shuffett accompanied his Dad to the tournament.
Many wives attended: Vonda Jones, Edna Hedrick, Judy Hughes, Chantal Bishop, Sue Tucker, Bernice Powell, Glenda Mays, Shirley Lerum,
Gayle Smith, Carol Williamson, Mickie Webster, Kathleen Mohr, Betty Vanover, Tiffany Stanley, Jan Martin, Gay McClard, Carolyn Estes, Bea Christian, Gladys Rice, and I'm sure I missed someone.
Also a number of checker players visited as Bobby Rice, Anthony Bishop, Royce Burnett, Vonda Jones but didn't participate in the tournament.
Teal Stanley brought his family... wife Tiffany, daughter 10-1/2 Erin and 2-1/2 Sara Beth, and 14 year old son Trey, and so did James Atkins who brought his 14 year old son, Lucas.
Sunday Worship service was moderated by Wade Holder, invocation by Teal Stanley, and a sermon by Ted Williamson.
Ken Christian's Brother-In-Law, L.W. Hale died Saturday Night at University Medical Center in Lebanon, TN.
Frank Davis re-entered the hospital Saturday, July 11th. Most players signed a Get Well Card to be send to Frank & Mary.
